Co-codamol 30/500 - nationwide supply shortage
What is happening?
There is a UK-wide shortage of co-codamol 30mg/500mg tablets, expected to last until at least June 2026. This shortage affects all GP practices and pharmacies.
During this period, this strength of co-codamol is not available, and supplies cannot be obtained by the Practice or by pharmacies.
What does this mean for patients?
-
If you usually take co-codamol 30mg/500mg, we will not be able to issue this medication during the shortage.
-
Other strengths of co-codamol and codeine tablets are also in limited supply and there is not enough stock to switch all patients to alternatives.
-
Repeated requests, appeals, or discussions with practice staff cannot change this, as the medication is not available to order.
What should I do instead?
-
Paracetamol 500mg tablets remain fully available, and there is sufficient supply to meet increased demand.
-
The Health Board has issued guidance for patients who take co-codamol regularly, including advice on gradually reducing use to avoid side-effects from stopping suddenly.
-
We strongly encourage patients affected by this shortage to read this Health Board guidance document for further advice.
Important note about contacting the Practice
We understand that this situation may cause concern or frustration. Unfortunately, this shortage is outside the control of the Practice and its staff.
Please be aware that our reception, pharmacy, and clinical staff cannot obtain additional supplies or make exceptions, and we ask that this is borne in mind when contacting the Practice.
